The series began in 1983 at the Jefferson Market Branch of the New York Public Library.
Spring 2003 ended with the publication of volume #975.

In 1994, The Waterways Project's Volumes and Volumes of Poetry Project merged with
the late Professor David Arthur Bickimer’s Pace Promise of Learning Awards.
Since Dr. Bickimer's death in 1995 the award has become part of
Waterways annual ceremony held at the New York Public Library.
The award is presented each year to students, teachers and administrators.

In the ‘02-3 school year Waterways published sixty individual poetry chapbooks,
twenty five site anthologies, and five prose chapbooks.
Four hundred fifty seven participants
registered for the online poetry workshop,

Students who are published in individual chapbooks are considered for inclusion in Streams,
which brings together a multiple array of New York City voices.
It is based on the curriculum developed by Waterways: "7 Heuristic Elements of Poetry."
